The mayor and city council of Regina are pushing forward to build a new stadium, costing a minimum total of $675 million. The new stadium is planned to hold no more seating than our current Mosaic Stadium and will not have a roof, turning this into a hefty expenditure that will still remain completely useless during our typical lengthy winter season. The city council has confirmed that a total renovation to revitalize Mosaic Stadium will cost $150 million solely from taxpayer's dollars. However, it is also confirmed that over $300 million will have to come from taxpayers in order to build a new, yet essentially identical stadium. This ill-thought and impulsive project is being rushed through the decision making processes in order to "seal the deal" before the upcoming municipal elections. Meanwhile, the city of Regina is in a housing crisis holding the lowest vacancy rate in all of Canada (0.6%) and there are zero plans to develop truly affordable housing below market rate. In addition, our water treatment plant is old and functioning inadequately to the point that there is asbestos in our drinking water. This added on top of the city's $290 million pension deficit, crumbling roads, and countless other unfinished projects, it is clear to see the unbalance of priorities. It is up to us as citizens of Regina, the taxpayers who will be paying for these expenses, to let our voices be heard that we do not want a stadium at this point in time, until after the other issues are properly addressed and fixed. Let us join together and help stop the stadium.
