Shetland Leasing and Property Developments Limited (SLAP) have started legal proceedings to evict local engineering firm HNP from their premises at Commercial Road, Lerwick. HNP is a well established business which has been located in the premises since 1974. If HNP are forced out of the building there is a high possibility they will have to close with the loss of 16 full-time jobs.

One hundred people have stepped up to tell SLAP that destroying local jobs is unacceptable. These suits think they can quietly push HNP out without anyone noticing but they are dead wrong.

SLAP thinks they can quietly kick a staple of this community to the curb without anyone noticing. We are not letting them tear apart these livelihoods for a quick payout while everyone else looks the other way.

The massive surge in support proves SLAP cannot just kick these workers onto the street without a fight. This momentum shows the board of directors that the community is watching their every move.

SLAP need a slap for this treatment of a long-established and valued Shetland company. The company is owned by the Shetland Charitable Trust, which is supposed to administer its money on behalf of the people of Shetland. They are out of control.

This affair seems a little odd. But pretty much par for how private businesses are treated by the 'Shetland state'. Halls of residence could go anywhere. A marine engineering firm can't. And what sort of company accepts a higher offer which is only conditional on planning consent?

HNP has been an important part of engineering services, especially to the fishing industry, for many years and should be allowed to remain on the site it occupies. Student accommodation can be located elsewhere. Allister Rendall

I thought SLAP was formed to provide financial assistance to local businesses by leasing back property and assets when a business lacked the finance for outright purchase? Have SLAP forgotten the reason for their existence?

HNP provides an essential service to Shetlands Marine, Aquaculture and Agricultural operators. Surely protecting local jobs must be the highest priority not the profits of SLAP who after all are only managing their estate on our behalf.

Can't understand how SLAP are even allowed to do this after HNP winning the bid process. Shetland jobs on the line to be replaced by a company from South building flats. Seems something wrong with SLAP board and understanding of the situation.
