Dear Purdue Food and Housing, Hundreds of meal swipes are lost weekly by Purdue students. These swipes are purchased before each semester begins, and according to Purdue Food and Housing Services once these swipes are lost so is the money paid. Students pay upfront for a meal plan that accommodates their estimated weekly food needs ranging from seven to twenty meals per week. Often students are unable to use the meal swipes for which they’ve already paid. According to the Director of Residential Dining, Ken Fields, the meal plans already assume that 13% of meals are missed in a 20 meals/week plan. These unused swipes are lost once the week is over. We are aware students are allowed to use meal swipes for a service called On-The-Go. This sack lunch (complete with a cup of sugary peaches!) is hardly the equivalent of an appetizing, buffet-style meal with family and friends. The current plan only allows students to share this On-The-Go type meal (e.g., a turkey sandwich, pack of pop tarts, and a carton of milk) with their guests instead of the various options of meals inside. Parents, who often pay for these meal plans, are themselves unable to access these meal swipes when they come to visit their children. Since changes are now being considered for future updates to this meal plan system, we propose an addendum on each plan wherein a set number of swipes are available to students throughout the month based on their meal plans to be used for guests rather than the On-The-Go system. Our plan includes five extra guest swipes per month for students with a twenty meal plan, four guest swipes for a fifteen meal plan, three for twelve, two for ten, and one for seven. We ask that Purdue Food and Housing Services honors the request of its student body and changes the meal plan to incorporate meal swipes for guests.
