Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing with regard to one Ringer China's consumer products, the magazine and website City Weekend [ http://ringier.cn/products/Consumer-Products/Consumer-Website/58/ ] . Specifically, I am concerned by the opinions being allowed for publication by City Weekend Shanghai.

The column adds nothing of value to highlight readers about Shanghai's cultural scene. I truly believes it just serves to promote the brand of the personality that writes the column. The writer is Spencer Tarring (aka DJ Spenny) a DJ in Shanghai (self-named as Shanghai's number 1 DJ) and I have linked to his columns below.

Please note that I have no issues or concern with the fact that he is a columnist. He could write as much as he wants about Shanghai's nightlife, music,   but his agenda so far seems to be largely about building a cult of personality rather than add something that may educate, entertain or encourage Shanghai readers to discover and share new experiences or insights into Shanghai's music/DJ scene. Even so, I would not be concerned enough to feel the need to write.

My real concern - the one that compels me to write - is that the editors of City Weekend Shanghai allow  his sexist characterization of women, his out-dated views and his bragging about his sexual prowess to be published on what the magazine itself claims is a family website. [ as detailed on this page: "Anything that is generally vulgar, hateful, obscene or profane. Keep it civil folks, it's a family website. " http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/comments-and-reviews-policy/ ]

Here are some extracts from DJ Spenny's columns:

"The reality in Shanghai is that every woman is available. Women will always go on a date with a man, even though they neglect to mention they have a boyfriend or husband, to either a) look for that bigger, better thing, b) kill the boredom they suffer in said relationship, or c) see what they are missing after being forced into a marriage at a young age. It’s the ‘upgrade’ city of the world. Naturally your best option is to be at the top of the ‘food chain’. I will go through the Spenny sure fire steps to achieving success with women in a future column."

"The reality is that money affords one the chance to pick up chicks. There’s a reason that men such as F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone, designer Roberto Cavalli, or actor Mickey Rourke date the most beautiful women in the world and it’s not because of their looks. These men live big and use their money as a means to an end. So when they walk in a room, all women take notice. In Shanghai, this is the fastest way of moving up the social registry. Just as men use money to entice women, chicks use their most important assets to land the big fish in the room: their looks."

"I did, however, enjoy the company of the Los Angeles cheerleaders who were in town and let’s just say I understand how the Chinese think we all look the same as I made that confusion with two of them hours apart. Here’s the new equation x = y/x + 2z + w/x. ‘x’ is Shanghai’s #1 DJ, ‘y’ is a Los Angeles cheerleader ‘z’ is time in hours, and ‘w’ is a case of mistaken identity. By dividing y/x you have mutual happiness, but when adding z the second y, thus becoming w and you get singular happiness and some explaining to do! Basically, I thought I was shagging the same cheerleader both times that evening but the second time was her friend. In this business, mistakes do get made!"

If the editors would not allow homophobic or racist opinions by columnists, then why are sexist attitudes allowed?

Yours sincerely
