Smithfield Foods Inc. is the world's largest pork producer and runs 26 facilities within the United States, including the world's largest meat-processing plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina. Smithfield has been condemned by the HSUS and PETA for various violations of animal rights. If laws protecting pigs from abuse were the same as to those pertaining cats and dogs, there would be no way for Smithfield to continue to operate. The inhumane device used to maximize profits as well as suffering for the animals is a barbaric device known as a gestation crate. Sows will spend most of their lives confined within these 6.5 by 2 feet metal cages, kept constantly pregnant. These cages are so small that when pregnant, the sows will be unable to turn over and sleep on their sides, forced to sleep upright, resulting in severe joint problems. Other leading pork producers have already phased out gestation crates, such as maxwell foods (%100 gestation crate free) and Cargill meats (%50 gestation crate free). Denying the sows the basic ability to move their entire lives is cruel and inhumane. Please help stop the suffering of these intelligent and caring animals today.
