Every day, all year long, pet rabbits are surrendered to animal shelters and abandoned onto our streets. Right now, as you read this, healthy, friendly, pet rabbits are dying in the streets and being euthanized at animal shelters simply because there are more rabbits (and dogs and cats) than there are people to adopt them. Why? Most people who abandon their rabbits are those who purchases them from unscrupulous or ill-informed merchants who sell baby bunnies without adequately educating buyers on what to expect for the life of the rabbit. We at Long Island Rabbit Rescue Group receive over 150 calls a month asking us to take unwanted rabbits. The majority of these rabbits were purchased at pet stores and garden centers, like Country Club Garden Center. We cannot rescue 99% of these doomed pets and despite all our efforts, we manage to find homes for about three rabbits per month. Do the math: This means that here on Long Island, over 147 rabbits go un-rescued each month, and die on the streets and in parks, or are euthanized at our local shelters that are already overburdened with unwanted cats and dogs. The recession has exacerbated this problem, and rescue groups are reporting higher-than-average numbers of unwanted pets. MERCHANTS, PLEASE HELP: DO NOT ADD TO THE PROBLEM! We, the undersigned, YOUR NEIGHBORS and CUSTOMERS, are boycotting Country Club because: 1) It is no longer acceptable to use live animals as tools to get attention for your store. 2) It is no longer acceptable to sell bunnies and ducks at Easter time. 3) Just as the Americans have discovered the underside of "puppy mills," we have learned that selling bunnies and ducklings at Easter is bad for the animals and bad for the community.
