Michgian Republican Rep. Mr. Wayne Schmidt, District 104, Traverse City, has proposed a bill, House Bill 4763, that will allow the use of red light cameras by municipalities throughtout the state of Michigan under the guise of safety for motoroists and pedestrians. Numerous studies and evidense show that red light cameras actually make intersectiosn LESS safe as the municipalities shorten yellow light times in order to cause more red light violations and drive profits. "I spent more than 10 years of my 24 year career as a traffic officer and fatal accident investigator. Red Light Cameras Decrease Safety. I know you said that but it bears repeating. With the cameras come, eventually but inevitably, shorter and shorter yellows. Shorter yellows means more trying their hand at the beat the light game. Accidents, injuries and fatalities will be the end result. This stuff purely pisses me off." These red light cameras are normally operated by a third party that split the profits with the municipalities, hence the drive for more "violators" by shortening yellow lights. You can get a ticket just for stopping on or just beyond the stop line, or being in the intersection when the light turns from yellow to red before turning, etc. . . Therefore, I am calling for the boycotting of any further patronage of Traverse City and the local area unitl Mr. Schmidt sees fit to retract his submission of this bill. Red light cameras are an invasion of privacy and a violation of an individuals sovereign rights that were established under the Constitution of this once proud Republic of America!
