As many may be aware, Théâtre la Seizième's Far Side of the Moon, written by the Legendary "Robert Lapage" has been brought to Vancouver for a 10 show run at the GoldCorp's Centre for the Arts at SFU. It is unfortunate timing that the CUPE workers at SFU have gone on a full-blown job action, picketing many parts of SFU. Specifically, they have picketed, and shut down, 2 of Robert Lapage's shows on November 3rd and the 4th. It is likely that if a deal is not struck, even more shows will be cancelled. I do not believe that the Arts community has any weight on SFU's decision to sign the CUPE into a contract, which is what the CUPE desires. In fact, the CUPE's actions are hurting a community that is already struggling. Now, one of our most celebrated beacons is being stifled for a job action that he cannot even slightly influence. I do not believe that such collateral damage is the intention of the CUPE union. They must know that their action to shut down Lapage's show is not putting any pressure on SFU, but rather hurting a community unrelated to their cause.
