Mattel, owner of American Girl Brands, which makes American Girl Dolls does a huge disservce to our young girls by making racially inaccurate dolls. For a company that lists its mission as celebrating girls and representing the diversity of the American girl, it is offensive that they Europeanize the features of their Native American, African American and Asian dolls . An example is the Native American doll with brown hair instead of the black and the African American dolls with light brown hair and light eyes. Can it be true that American Girl only recognizes and glorifies girls with some or all European (caucasion) lineage? Mattel certainly has the right to produce dolls that are racially inaccurate. However, they do a great disservice to ALL of our girls by slighting and disrespecting the true diversity of American girls. Their Europeanization of the dolls of color is reminiscent of the old school books that white washed the early American history of Native Americans and African Americans. In 2013, consumers have a right to expect non-discriminatory products from Mattel. Please join me in asking Mattel to make racially accurate dolls that authentically celebrate the beauty of our diverse American girls.
