Dear Prime Minister of Malta Hon. Joseph Muscat, Minister of Education & Minister of Health,

After promoting health eating to children and even going into innitatives of giving out fruit and vegetables at school, which is a great initiative, having junk food hawkers just outside of primary schools is putting all efforts down the drain.

Just in front of nearly all primary schools in Malta, one could find hawkers selling Doughnuts, Pastizzi, Ice Cream and other non healthy foods that children automatically would want and make parents buy. It is not easy for parents to explain to 3-8 year olds that these foods are not good for you and when you don't buy, they get frustrated and enter tantrums. Situations like these cause unnecessary frustration onboth the little ones and also the parents.

With a little thought and action this could easily be remedied. one could put a distance restriction like there is when it comes to other fixed location businesses. Hawkers are not allowed by law to set up within a set distance of another fixed location business of the same nature, primary schools could be easily added to this restriction.

We parents are looking for help in creating a healthy lifestyle for our children and this will be a huge step in helping us eliminate unnecessary junk food.
