In the wake of the tragedies this week,we all find ourselves asking why this tragedy came to pass. The truth is there is no easy answer to this question. People keep mentioning gun control, mental health, violence in the media, but I believe we must also take a look at how these murderers are allowed to create a legacy for themselves by these heinous acts of violence. I believe that as a nation, or even as a planet, we need to agree to stop giving these people the satisfaction of fame. Let us stop releasing the names and pictures of the criminals, stop delving into their psyches, and stop harassing their poor families with questions about their lives. It encourages copycats and other people fearful of living a life unremarked by the public. Instead of focusing on these awful human beings, let us instead focus on the heroes that are revealed by these tragedies; a principal that lunges at an armed man to stop his rampage, a boyfriend giving his life to save the girl he loves, Santa Claus letting the children know that everything is going to be ok, and the first responders that tend to the wounded and give the victims a sense of safety. Let this petition tell the media to do their part for society and help in this small way to stop tragedies like this one from happening again in the future.
