Comments: Wilton Friends, It makes me very sad to see that our school district has decided that the way make our kids ready in todays world is to make them sit in a classroom for a longer amount of time. No sports, dance, art or PLAYDATES! and at the age of 5. PLEASE, please consider signing our petition to keep Wilton Kindergarten to Extended Day Kindergarten instead of Full Day Kindergarten. It would mean a lot to me.Flag -

Name: Katie Cunningham on Jan 4, 2013Comments: As a professor of education and a curriculum and instruction specialist, I am in full support of saving extended day. The small group instruction model that extended day provides is an invaluable tool which pays off for years to come. We need Kindergartners to thrive everyday in school, to have a zest for learning, and to have the energy to pursue their passions and interests. Over-academicizing Kindergarten and physically and mentally overtaxing our youngest learners will have consequences for years to come. In particular, we need to look critically at what full day requires of five and six year olds especially boys who may decide early on that school is not for them due to the developmentally inappropriate expectations full day Kindergarten requires of them. As a mother of two preschool-aged sons and as a professional in the field, I urge the board to save the Extended Day model.Flag

The Extended day program is a great opportunity to transition into a few longer days, while still giving young children a chance to "just be kids" and play, or pursue an activity they really enjoy. More class time does not mean more learning - just more sitting at desks!Flag

Name: Ruth Harrell on Jan 5, 2013Comments: We moved to Wilton this last summer, in part, because of the rave ratings and reviews from people around here regarding the school system. We have a daughter currently in kindergarten and love the extended day program. It is a unique program that allows the children to have more of the teachers' attention twice a week because only half of the class is there. We have another daughter who will be attending kindergarten next year, and to be honest, I worry that she will not be ready to attend full day kindergarten 5 days a week. It is exhausting on these little ones. We came from Amsterdam, where my daughters' preschool teachers were from all over the world. They said on several occasions that full day schools in their countries do not start until the child is 7, and that they have found children more ready to learn and pick things up easier. I think that the ratings Wilton schools get shows that what we have already in place far exceeds many other school systems around the country. Why change that? It is already one of the best, possibly because of the great start they have in the extended day kindergarten, with more teacher attention and three afternoons a week to relax and play at home (so that they can be more ready to learn on their long days). Please keep extended day kindergarten.Flag
