PREVENT ECOLOGICAL DISASTER
AND SUPPORT MAPUCHE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN CHILE
The Chilean forestry and wood pulp company CELCO has caused several ecological disasters in Chile. Scientific reports have demonstrated that the sewage dumped from one of its pulp plants caused an ecological disaster in a Nature Sanctuary in 2004. Now CELCO is planning to build a pipeline that will dump the waste from that same pulp plants in the sea outside Mehuin and Missisippi, Chile. Scientists have also questioned the role of the Chilean environmental policies when regulating discharges from CELCOs pulp plants that caused the disaster in 2004.
Mapuche Lafkenche indigenous people, (making their living as fishermen) are defending the clean water and fish free from contamination. The resistance to the pipeline has been maintained for more than 10 years but is now facing a critical moment. CELCO has recently paid big sums of money to other fishermen who now are fighting against and threatening the Lafkenche people and others opposing the sewage pipeline.
The Swedish/Finnish Company Stora Enso has a partnership with CELCO, and at the same time Stora Enso proclaims to be working with corporate social responsibility (CSR) and aiming at a sustainable development.
CELCO, a company responsible for at least three ecological disasters is currently being benefited for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which is aimed at sustainable development within the Kyoto protocol.
WE DEMAND THAT:
- The Chilean government forces CELCO to stop contaminating and disturbing the ecosystems in Chile.
- The United Nations and the European Union adopt immediate measures to protect Mapuche Lafkenche communities and other people defending the sea in Mehuin, Missisippi and the Valdivian coastline in Chile.
- Stora Enso forces its partner CELCO to stop any acts that jeopardize both the Mapuche communities and the ecosystems in Chile.
- That the CDMs representatives start a deep investigation about CELCO environmental records and stop CELCO from selling Carbon Credits as a consequence of the actions against the Mapuche Lafkenche communities in Mehuin and Mississippi.
