Body shaming is the act of making negative comments about someone’s size or weight. It’s harmful and affects everyone. World wide, only 4 percent of women consider themselves beautiful (Source), 90 percent of girls in eleventh and twelfth grade have dieted (Source), 15 percent of male high school students have tried to lose weight along with 44 percent of their female counterparts (Source), of male middle school and high school students, 40 percent exercise regularly to increase muscle mass and 38 percent have used protein supplements (Source). These statistics are concerning, they do not reflect a healthy society. No one should feel so poorly about themselves.

With these things in mind, you should take this pledge to be body positive. By taking it, you promise not to judge people on their size. Acknowledge that weight does not necessarily denote health. Be mindful of how what you say could make those around you feel. Taking this pledge means you understand and believe that someone’s worth is not determined by how much or little they weigh, it is determined by the person they are, the way they act.
