Hierbij nemen wij, de ondergetekende medewerkers van de UvA en HvA, expliciet stelling tegen het standpunt van een groep van onze collega’s die menen dat het CvB van de UvA/HvA zou moeten aftreden en tegen de argumenten die zij daarvoor aanvoeren.

Wij adviseren het CvB op hun post te blijven en door te gaan op de ingeslagen weg. Wij zijn trots op onze instellingen, die tot de sterkste van Europa behoren, en beschouwen de vaak negatieve berichtgeving over de UvA van de afgelopen tijd dan ook als betreurenswaardig eenzijdig. Meer concreet:

(1) Wij steunen het CvB in zijn aanpak in de geest van het gepubliceerde 10-puntenprogramma voor de UvA en de ingestelde onderzoekscommissies.

(2) Wij zien in de ontruiming van het Maagdenhuis geen reden het CvB steun te onthouden. De verklaring voor het optreden voorafgaand aan de ontruiming die het CvB in de email van 13 april heeft gegeven is overtuigend.

(3) Wij hebben beslist zorgen over de financiële toekomst van de UvA, maar wij zien op dit moment geen bewijs van onjuist beleid bij dit college of bij eerdere colleges als oorzaak van deze zorgen. De commissies die op basis van het 10-puntenprogramma opgezet worden zouden zulke problemen aan het licht kunnen doen komen, maar zover zijn we op dit moment zeker niet.

(4) Problemen van financiering en doorgeslagen evaluatie- en regelcultuur aan de UvA/HvA plagen ook de andere universiteiten en hogescholen en zijn vooral het gevolg van nationale politieke en bestuurlijke keuzes. Derhalve is daar gemeenschappelijk een politiek punt van te maken van groot belang, maar dat vergt eenheid. Interne strijd zal alleen leiden tot een zwakkere positie van hoger onderwijs en onderzoek.

(5) Wij vinden het onwenselijk dat een groepering als DNU die bij herhaling een uitspraak van de rechter negeert, de mening en meningsuitingen van grote groepen medewerkers en studenten op luide en ondemocratische wijze gijzelt.

(6) De vastgoedportefeuille is uiteraard een complex probleem, dat de UvA net als alle

universiteiten en hogescholen opgelegd heeft gekregen van de overheid. Dat hier niet altijd vlekkeloos wordt gehandeld lijkt ons logisch, en geen bewijs van onkunde van het CvB. En dat er ondanks de complexiteit en moeilijke starts ook daar successen worden geboekt moge blijken uit de nieuwbouw van de FNWI en de Amstelcampus.

(7) Dit college bestaat uitsluitend uit hoogleraren en voormalig hoogleraren. Dat zien wij als een groot goed, en reden erop te vertrouwen dat ze uitstekend begrijpen waar de belangen van onderzoek en onderwijs liggen. Dat er desondanks soms pijnlijke besluiten nodig zijn om de begroting kloppend te krijgen is geen bewijs van het tegendeel.

(8) Nogmaals, wij zijn trots op onze prachtige UvA en HvA, in de overtuiging dat er hier door velen op Europees topniveau onderwijs en onderzoek bedreven en genoten wordt, en nemen nadrukkelijk afstand van de uiterst negatieve en eenzijdige wijze waarop sommige van onze collega’s deze instellingen in het nieuws brengen.

Herewith we, the undersigned employees of the UvA and HvA, explicitly

state our disagreement with the view of a group of our colleagues who

feel that the Board of the UvA/HvA should resign and with the reasoning

they give for this view.

We advise the Board to stay at their post and continue in the direction

they have now chosen. We are proud of our institutions, who are among

the strongest in Europe, and regard the often negative publicity about

the UvA in the recent past as regrettably one-sided. More concretely:

(1) We support the Board in its plan of action in the spirit of the

10-point plan for the UvA and the established committees of investigation.

(2) We see no reason in the eviction of the Maagdenhuis to withold support

from the Board. The explanation of the actions preceding the eviction

that the Board gave in its email of April 13 is convincing.

(3) We are definitely concerned about the financial future of the UvA,

but at the moment find no evidence of failing policies of this Board

or previous Boards being the cause of this concern. The committees

that have been set up based on the 10-point plan could find evidence

of such failures, but at the moment we have certainly not reached that

stage.

(4) Problems of finance and a culture of excessive regulation and evaluation

at the UvA/HvA also trouble the other universities and are predominantly

the result of national political and administrative choices. It is

therefore greatly important to make a concerted political point of this,

but that requires unity. Internal strife will only lead to a weaker

position of research and education.

(5) We find it undesirable that a group such as DNU, which has repeatedly

ignored judicial rulings, holds hostage the opinion and expression of

opinion of many employees and students in a loud and undemocratic manner.

(6) Real estate management is of course a complex problem, which has been

imposed on the UvA and all universities and universities of applied sciences by the government. That not all

actions in this area are perfect seems natural to us, and no evidence of

incompetence of the Board. And that despite the complexity and difficult

beginnings there are also successes in this area may be illustrated by

the new building of FNWI and the Amstel Campus.

(7) This Board consists only of professors and former professors. We view

this as a very positive point, and reason to trust that they understand

extremely well where the interests of research and education lie. That

in spite of this difficult decisions are sometimes needed in order to

balance the budget, is no evidence to the contrary.

(8) Again, we are proud of our splendid UvA and HvA, convinced that research

and education are conducted and enjoyed here at top European level, and

strongly disagree with the extremely negative and one-sided manner in

which our colleagues cause our institutions to be in the news.
