STEEL: Support, Compassion, Tolerance & Empathy for Exceptional Learners
This petition is being represented to Miami University as a part of my thesis. My goal is to change a part of the Miami University curriculum for the education majors, family studies majors and health care majors. STEEL got its name because these individuals are built tough. They go through so much every day and they undergo challenges most of their lives. Yet, they are the most compassionate individuals you will meet. I am petitioning Miami University Oxford, Middletown & Hamilton to integrate DST 272, Introduction to Disability Studies, into the curriculum for the listed majors above. Those with disabilities, mild to severe, have gone unheard for too long. It's a scary world and having people who don't understand what they are going through can be tough. According to the Center for Disease Control, "the weighted population of individuals from ages 18-44 years that have a disability currently stands at 14,251,529 individuals. That comes out to be 12.7% of the United States population." Teachers who are in their lives everyday should have a basic understanding of how to help them with their educational studies as well as their personal growth. Health care majors and family studies majors should be well equipped to handle cases when they are represented with such cases. If you agree, please help me and sign my petition.
