Dear Rt Honourable Theresa May,
I am writing to support the application for refugee status of Maryama Sheekh Yuusuf, Everson Taelo Moyo, and Loyd Ncube. These exemplary individuals have been volunteer performers in the recent Theatre of Witness production, "Sanctuary," which toured Northern Ireland in October and November 2013.
Maryama fled Somalia because she was violently oppressed as a minority tribe member and her return would place her life at risk. In Belfast, she has taken up leadership in the Somalian community in Belfast and helps other women in her situation improve their own lives through education and making steps to achieve their goals.
Loyd fled Zimbabwe after being forcibly enlisted into the Zimbabwean army. In Belfast, Loyd has volunteered his time with the Northern Ireland Community of Refugees and Asylum Seekers (NICRAS) and become an essential part of the community.
Everson fled Zimbabwe after his life was threatened by veterans who suspected his dissent with the political party in power. It is still unsafe for him to return. While in Belfast, Everson has volunteered in NICRAS and shared his gift of music and dance; performing in the Belfast Mela Festival and organizing a dance choreography for the British Red Cross fundraising events.
These individuals have demonstrated that they are truly assets to Northern Ireland. Maryama, Loyd, and Everson hope to become even more active members of the Northern Ireland community, and can only do so once they obtain status. Please grant Maryama, Loyd, and Everson refugee status so that they can continue to live in safety and build peace and understanding between the people of Northern Ireland.
