At 7:10 a.m. Northshore School District (NSD) has the earliest high school start time in the region. Research shows that very early high school start times, such as in NSD, reduce sleep sufficiently to negatively impact academic performance and health. We believe that cost-neutral solutions exist to permit NSD to move high school start times later. As such, we request that NSD administration consider the “modest adjustments” to high school start times for the 2011-12 school year, and work toward more substantial changes in start times for subsequent years that may include work on labor contract issues.
