This petition is for students, faculty, and staff at Stanford University who support a tobacco-free campus initiative. That means that for all intents and purposes tobacco products will be banned from Stanford. You could also call this a petition for a smoke-free Stanford, a petition for a campus-wide smoking ban, or any number of other things - the goal is the same. The Stanford School of Medicine and hospital already have comprehensive smoking bans in place. I see no reason why the rest of the university shouldn\'t have the same sort of ban. We\'re dealing with a 100% preventable health hazard that also leads to litter on campus (cig butts, cig packages, etc.). We can set a new precedent by becoming the first university, to the best of my knowledge, to have a campus-wide smoking policy of this sort. We can do this! Many Stanford faculty and staff who I have contacted have expressed a lot of support for this initiative I\'m pushing - for instance, the Deans of the Schools of Medicine and Engineering have expressed support in conversations I have had with them. I feel the student support in the community for this initiative is also there, and I want to prove it to university leadership. PLEASE refer this petition to every Stanford community member who you know because the more people we have sign this, the stronger the case we will have! Have a wonderful day, - James McDonough (A Ph.D. student in materials science and engineering who "engineered" this initiative)
