At Stanford TGR fees have nearly tripled in the last few years. This policy is having a damaging effect on the humanities and social sciences community. Unlike their peers in the sciences whose professors make up the difference, humanities and social science students must often fund this increased burden out of pocket. There is no financial incentive for the faculty as there is in a lab-grant situation to push students to finish, so Stanford’s independent students are left to face this daunting and discouraging financial obstacle on their own. Furthermore, Stanford is placing a strain on these students that is disproportionate to that felt by its scientists and by students at other institutions. For the relatively little revenue generated from this population in TGR fees, this policy has created a great deal of anxiety and bitterness amongst the student body. Worst of all, it will undermine its goal of decreasing time to degree as individuals in the affected fields must turn to part-time work to cover Stanford’s high fees on top of their own costs of living.
For those students who must pay out of pocket beyond their university fellowship, Stanford should adopt a nominal registration fee comparable to those found at similar universities across the country. This fee should cover the administrative costs of maintaining an open student file and allow the student access to group health care coverage. There should be an optional supplementary fee for use of the libraries set at the alumnus rate.
We call on Stanford to recognize the needs of its independent scholars and to ease the unique financial burden we currently face. |
