| 1290 | Peter McIntyre | I worked on provincial newspapers for almost 20 years before going freelance. There was certainly no golden age, but staffing levels were much higher, specialist subjects (health, education etc) were taken seriously and the sense of obligation to local communities was strong. Journalists today still have that commitment - but not the resources. This is the bedrock of journalism in this country and it is being undermined in the name of cheap profit. |
