Name: Gianpaolo Manalastas 050004578 on Jun 7, 2010Comments: While cuts across the board are inevitable, there seems to be no real logic behind this decision - if the School of Modern Languages is to stay in the top 10 and move further up the table, removing the members of staff who ensure that the core principles are being taught well will only have the opposite effect. I had Patrizia in my first year right up to my final year, and her work was crucial for all students - beginners through to fourth years. The same could be said for Carmen, who wrote the textbook for students in Beginner's Spanish. I still think that the French department lost an amazing tutor when Isabelle Scott retired last year, but I'm glad that she isn't here to suffer this deplorable insult to her work and legacy.Flag

Name: Georgina Osborne on Jun 7, 2010Comments: As a modern language student I have directly benefitted from the teaching of the Senior Language Tutors, and feel that they greatly enhanced my language learning experience. While I understand the need for budget cuts, I do not accept trhat such staff cuts, which will be detrimental to a currently successful and well-run department, are in any way in the long-term interests of the university. Such a move would greatly harm the learning of the modern languages student population.Flag

Name: Jennie Miles on Jun 7, 2010Comments: This is a clear example of short term knee jerk reaction with no thought of the long term impact of this decision. I am appalled that a university of St. Andrews standing is willing to spend money on property to enhance the status of the Dean but is unwilling to maintain the current high quality of its teaching staff.Flag

Name: Trish Stewart on Jun 7, 2010Comments: This is disgraceful (but oh so conveniently timed). How dare Louise Richardson lecture us about the need for funding cuts when she's on a salary of £240 000 per year (and how much of that goes to rent?). How many Senior Language Tutors(and other academics who are sure to be next on the chopping block) could be kept by reducing her salary (and that of all the other 'managers') to that of a senior academic? Isn't this the woman who said, 'In my book, education is worth spending money on over and above practically everything else.' ?Flag

Name: Catherine Marsden on Jun 7, 2010Comments: Matric: 060000975 It is ludicrous to expect a Modern Languages Dept to function effectively without a group of fully committed, native speaking language tutors. These redundancies will lead to a decline in the school's academic performance. The staff involved are some of the most committed tutors in Modern Languages and I can safely say that Ms Zimmermann has been the most influential tutor I have had at St Andrews.Flag

It took several years for the position of SLT to be accepted and understood in the School and University, but now it is integral to the individual language programs, to the successful education of the students -- the students will be the first to be hurt, followed by the inevitable harm to the reputation of Modern Language degrees at St. Andrews.Flag

This is an extremely short sighted decision and can only result in a reduction in teaching quality as additional demands fall onto the shoulders of the PhD lecturers. Frau Zimmermann is one of the most superb and dedicated teachers that I have ever had and every German language student at this university recognises the detrimental impact that her forced departure will have on the German department and on the quality of teaching.Flag
