New York City belongs to ALL people!

Poor people deserve to stay in their homes.

Stand up to NYCHA
Stop Privatization of the Projects

We are demanding that moves underway by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) to sell and lease buildings, parking lots and playgrounds in our housing projects to private real estate developers stop now! The projects were built so that the poor could have decent places to live, and we must all stand up to protect the homes of the poor.

NYCHA says it needs the money. The money to maintain and improve the projects can be found if the politicians in City Hall, Albany and Washington have the political will. The lives of our communities don't matter to them. They will only respond if we force them to. So it's up to us! We the people - whether we live in NYCHA or not - need to stand up and say:

NO to the destruction of NYCHA and NO to the attacks on our poor!

We call on all New Yorkers to demand that NYCHA:

  • Protect - not privatize - public housing.
  • Address the maintenance crises without displacing tenants.
  • Preserve playgrounds, parking lots and other open spaces as important community resources.

And most importantly, stop pushing out the poor!

Fact Sheet - The Privatization of NYCHA Housing and Property

1. Mayor de Blasio's so called "affordable " housing plan calls for 17,000 units of housing to be built on NYCHA land. 13,500 units will be so-called affordable (60% AMI - average media income or $50,000 household annual income) and 3,500 will be market rate rentals. NYCHA is also selling 50% share in apartment units to developers at Los Campos Housing.

2. NYCHA is selling and leasing its parking lots, open spaces and playgrounds to developers for private "affordable" housing, built and owned by developers. The public housing safety net is being torn down.

3. NYCHA's Next Generation plan for this housing will be accomplished in partnership with private developers.

4. The new housing or infill housing will be privately owned and managed by private real estate developers. NYCHA residents do not have access to the amenities of the new housing that is being built on NYCHA open space and parking lots.

5. After 30 years developers can opt out of affordable housing programs and charge market rents.

6. 25% of the infill housing will be available to NYCHA residents by lottery or a total of 4,250 units.

7. 600,000 people live in 178,000 units of NYCHA housing. The average household income is $23,500.

8. 2,000,000 New Yorkers pay over 30% of their gross income in rent. Over half pay 50% or more of their gross income in rent.

9. NYCHA is accelerating its eviction of families who house family members who have been convicted.

10. Ingersoll Houses-Brooklyn, Millbrook Houses-Bronx, Van Dycke Houses-Brooklyn, Wyckoff Gardens-Brooklyn, and Holmes Towers-Manhattan are the next publicly known projects that will be targeted by NYCHA for infill housing.
