Comments: The situation with older adults being abused and exploited seems to be going through a period of increase, perhaps because of the hard times, or perhaps because of the increase in numbers of people with Alzheimer's, but the funding to address the problems is drastically going down.

Comments: My parents were victims of elder financial abuse. The perpetrators were my brother and sister. While my father was an inpatient @ Kaiser Hosp. my siblings moved my mother out of their home and placed her in an ALF which just so happen to be run by some very close friends of my sister. My sibs took my dad's vehicle with the intentions of selling it, then, refused to return it unless my dad gave them $3,000.00. He did and still, had to have AAA tow it home from Malibu. My brother canceled their phone and atm card. Leaving them with no money and no access to the outside world. My dad revoked the POA and died from "Severe Sepsis," one month later. The abuse only increased from that point. The isolation, neglect, threats of abandonment, the mistreatment by the ALF employees, and the financial abuse/fraud my mother had to endure was unbearable. Her house was sold for well under market value, and my father's death was never reported to CalPERS (which I believe had something to do with gaining access to his pension.) She was in terrible need of dental care and had a difficult time eating due to tooth and mouth pain. She was told that there was no money for dental care until my father's pension check arrived. He died in May, and was now going on October. She died on 12/19/11 as a result of "abdominal compartment syndrome, duodenal ulcer, NSAID use, and back pain." The financial abuse is now directed @ me and the small amount of money I received as a beneficiary to my mother's retirement, (she retired with $948,000.00 in 2004 and @ the time of her death only, $12,000.00 remained.) My brother and sister are trying to force me to give them my $3,600.00 to pay for the funeral costs. (Which has already been paid for.) Despite my efforts to seek help from the agencies whose specific purpose is to prevent/stop elder abuse, nothing was done to put an end to her suffering. I have hired a private investigator to locate any assets that were not included in our family trust. I'm told that it's possible my siblings behavior could possibly be considered "criminal," and I should report the matter to the D.A.'s office. They didn't care while she was alive, so, why would they care now? Thanks for this opportunity to share my story,,,,Keep up the good work. You are the voice for those that have none. Sincerely, Christine Minicucci
