gloria j garibayI don't feel it is right to take away our hard earned money. We have spent years setting it aside for our retirement, what can we depend on? Not the Government! Start with the "Leaders" who can afford it, we can't!

Ed LeVineCongress should be making teaching MORE attractive to prospective teachers, not less. I imagine many who would enter teacher late in their careers will not consider this profession because they cannot collect social security along with the meager amount they will collect in their pensions. It's time for Congress to make things equal for ALL tax payers.
Stephanie LartelierI wonder why you want to punish me for working since I was 13 years old? Just because I now work for a school system, doesn't mean I did not earn the benefits from Social Security that I paid into for almost 10 years! Thank you for taking on this issue and being fair to people in the middle class!

Jamie GrossIt's not fair that I've paid into Social Security before I was a teacher, and thatI will not see any or a very small amount of it when I retire.

Melanie HortonPlease vote in favor of this bill. As an educator, I do not want to be penalized, just because I chose to go into education as a profession.

Kevin A. AllenIt is fair for my family to get what I earned.
David BordenI worked 15 years in the Medical field before becoming a teacher. To be "penalized" some $400 for simply working previously in a private field of work is senseless and a personal outrage -- and should be ended immediately. Please support and pass HR 82 by Congressmen Berman and McKeon and S 206 by Senators Feinstein and Collins!

Melissa Silliman MukaiThis "windfall" provision is part of the problem in keeping qualified people from teaching. Get smart, get rid of this unfair burden on our teachers.
Teresa McAllisterI don't know if this bill would affect retired teachers already on social security. They should be covered also. My husband's work was mostly under social security so he didn't have that many years as a teacher. Although he only gets around $850 from STRS, his social security was reduced to only around $650. How is this fair.? My husband certainly wouldn't have gone into teaching if he had know about the deduction to his Social Security. Anyone was has a long-term work history under social security would NEVER teach if they knew about this provision. Not only did my husband have to take a large salary cut to teach, it cut his retirement income. It would be fine if he taught most of his work career because he would get a very nice pension from STRS. The Social Security offset shows what the country things of teachers.

AnonymousAll I have is Social Security of a little over one thousand dollars/mo. If I would retire, I would loose over $400 owing to this very unfair act. My retirement from the school district is about $700+. I would retire then with about $1,300./month which I cannot live on. Is this fair.?I am almost 74 and still have to work. Is there any reason to live under these prospects?
H. AragonI worked and paid into Social Security before entering the educational profession. It is not fair that CA is one of 13 states to penalize those of us who chose to go into teaching. Trust me, our social security is not a "windfall."
AnonymousThe day I began to collect my STRS pension (a very small one, as I began full-time teaching late), I lost the Social Security I was receiving from my late husband. The loss of this income has put me at the poverty level. I'm unable to collect either my late husband's SS or my own SS, plus having to pay for Medicare Part B out of my small STRS pension. After putting in well over 32 years of service with LAUSD (14 as an Education Aide, with no service credit accorded in those days), I feel doubly penalized. This windfall off-set provision remains in effect in only a few states, and should be eliminated.

Susan RaudryI left the private industry to work as a teacher since there was such a strong need. Now I will be unable to receive 15 years worth of social security benefits EARNED. We shouldn't be penalized for becoming a public service worker!
Kari NapierThank you Senator Feinstein for helping us get what is ours. God Bless.
