Name: Jenny Onkka on Jan 12, 2006State: CACountry: USComments: The Safeway Store is ridiculous. It's almost obscene to have a food store that big. LOOK at those ceilings; all that wasted space. How much extra $$$ in energy for heat and air is THAT COSTING. First the Megaplex which we are fighting, Then the Safeway which we didn't have any say in. Well I really like TARGET but NOT at the expense of our precious community, our precious town.Flag

Name: Josie Montoya on Jan 17, 2006State: CACountry: USComments: It is clear from the addition of the new, larger Safeway, that there is insufficient space for the number of vehicles developers hope to attract. The Planning Board should maintain the small town feel of the Southshore area and locate Target in a more appropriate area; one where extensive traffic won't create a hardship for residents.Flag

Name: Brenda Benner on Jan 24, 2006State: CACountry: USComments: The surrounding streets cannot accomodate the traffic this store would generate. Since the opening of Trader Joe's and now the awfully huge Safeway, traffic has already become unbearable, frequently backing up from Park St. beyond Broadway and traffic accidents have noticably increased in the vacinity of Park Ave. and Otis. The amount of traffic on our adjacent dead-end street of Park Ave. (not Park St.!) has also steadily gotten much worse (including turn-arounds made with squealing tires, even hit and runs, as people get lost and get angry trying to find Park St., which tells me a lot of out-of-towners are traveling to this shopping center already. A much more appropriate place for the kind of store that is Target would be at Blanding, adjacent to the Fruitvale bridge.Flag

Name: Margaret Powell on Jan 27, 2006State: CACountry: USComments: I live on the corner of Park Avenue and Otis. The traffic has increased considerably already due to the new Safeway. Their trucks actually shake our home! I do not want my real estate value diminish because of a discount store! This island is experiencing a flush of new money...why can't we get something nice, like a pottery barn I very much against the new Target.Flag

Name: Michael Curtis on Jan 30, 2006State: CACountry: USComments: While I support better shopping opportunities in Alameda, I don't see a need for a large store in that location. It will significantly and negatively impact the surrounding neighborhoods, and increase an already overloaded infrastructure with auto and human traffic. Better to put regional stores on the other side of the island, where customers won't have to drive across the island on streets not set up for that kind of thoroughfare use.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Feb 10, 2006State: CACountry: USComments: We do not need a target store on Alameda. I agree that it will increase the traffic to a burdensome amount for our small and limited streets. Target has a number of locations in the Oakland area which would serve Oakland, the clientele that would visit a target store.Flag

Why not just do what we do best and not try to be something that we are not. We REALLY need to replace 3 out of 5 members on our city council who pay absolutely no attention to the desires and wants of the electorate. Count me in to support in every way those who would run to unseat these arrogant few who are not listening to their constituents.Flag

Name: Ken Copen on Sep 24, 2006State: CACountry: USComments: My wife and I would like nothing more then to have a Target close by, but having it down in the South Shore Center would be a disaster. Our street Otis drive would become a speedway for traffic. Eight street, which is already fairly congested, would become undrivable. Going to the shopping center would become a nightmare. It's already unpleasant with the new Safeway and Trader Joes next to each other drawing heavy traffic. Put it over on the old base and it'd be worth consideration. The new theatre on Park Street is going to be bad enough. Let's stop the madness while we still can.Flag

It would only keep me away from Southshore. All those people who want Alameda to be more like Walnut Creek (ick!) should move to Walnut Creek and leave us alone.Flag
