A wooden skatepark was provided in Southport in 2004. The popularity of the facility was such that the council realised that the park was becoming far too crowded at peak times and looked into ways to spread users around the area. Following a report highlighting that the intended plans would most likely prove unsuccessful and a poor investment these plans ground to a halt. Move forwards to 2007 and the wooden park is now rapidly becoming an eyesore, has suffered weather damage, has been poorly maintained and has now become a haven for anti-social behaviour and acts of violence targeting the skatepark user group. At the same time the Council have introduced an anti-skateboarding bye-law to the town. We the undersigned petition Sefton Council for a review of the current skatepark facility with a view to providing a safe environment for the town\'s skatepark users. We support the construction of a concrete skatepark, designed by professionals with experience of skateboarding/aggresive in-line skating/BMX and constructed by professional engineers with proven experience of high quality skatepark construction. Now is the time for Sefton Council to embrace the free sports, invest in youth and present to the rest of the country the highest quality free sports facility in the UK.
