To Whom It May Concern: We, the affiliates and students of Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television, have recognized a problem within our school. Due to the off-hours construction on the third floor of the Communication Arts Building it has been impossible for our students to record foley or ADR on the second floor for their films. As film students we are required to complete our films to the best of our ability. We are graded, not only on the visual aspect of our films, but also the quality of their sound. If only for the reason that we have our own Recording Arts Department we should be allowed to have full access to professional facilities as we were promised. We as clients, consumers, and customers are being promised access to professional equipment and facilities of which we are being denied. We understand that this is a difficult transition time for our school but the further development of our facilities should not interfere with the current productions already underway. Eighty-plus films are in post-production at the moment, and eighty-plus films are suffering. It is impossible to use the facilities in the basement because of the lack of sound-proofing in those rooms. Recording sound fx in the basement while other students are editing is terrible and recording sound fx while having to deal with banging and demolition even at odd hours of the night, when students generally work, is detrimental not only to our films but to our morale. What we are suggesting is not extreme. In a perfect world construction would completely halt so that the films being completed this semester could finish in a timely and convenient manner. However, this world is not perfect and we understand that the construction needs to happen. In light of that this is what we’re suggesting: either the construction gives us some kind of schedule of their plans and takes our needs into consideration OR the school will have to undertake the costs of renting the facilities they promised us in the first place. We, the undersigned, students and affiliates of LMU SFTV, require immediate action on the part of LMU SFTV to confront this issue head-on to resolve this problem. Thank you, Saski Miller and Kirsten Filonczuk
