Name: Cecil Scott on Apr 17, 2010Comments: It seems to me that this problem is connected with so many other problems that plague our public school system, most notably, school overcrowding. When there are too many kids to feed in too small a space and in too little time, efficiency is important -- and trays are necessary to that efficiency. Without them, kids make messes that have to be cleaned up, kids drop food while transporting it to their seats, trash is left on tables, kids have to make repeat trips to the kitchen to get food they could not carry back in their hands in one trip, etc. These problems are incompatible with short feeding shifts of large numbers of children in a crowded cafeteria. So trays, unfortunately, are necessary. One possible solution is for each child to bring one tray to school at the beginning of the year with the other school supplies that families typically provide, and use it throughout the year. When lining up to go to lunch, each child takes out his/her tray. After lunch, each child cleans the tray and stores it for the next day. This teaches kids some of the responsibilities attendant to mealtime.Flag

Name: Martha on May 19, 2010Comments: i think thats a good idea its just those plates arent stong enough to be holding the food. in my school i heard that janitors are always cleaning alot on tuesdays becuaase the kids drop the food. so instead of using styro foam plates and those paper ones, thet should give those trays like the ones they have in fastfood restuarants. their have more room to put the food and the wont fall!!! in my school on tuesday plates we use , we are supposed to stack them. most kids dont even know. when i look in the garbage, all see is those plates.Flag
