HMRC, after many years of agreeing that 5 and 6 a side football was exempt from VAT to players, have now issued a brief stating that VAT must be paid on all small sided football leagues – just like the one YOU play in.

This will add - or has already added - 20% on top of match fees for small sided teams. 5 and 6 a side teams often contain players from minority, disadvantaged or low income households who are not able to afford gym membership or other more expensive sports and equipment.

This policy will inevitably cause either hardship to existing players, or drive participants away from regular exercise, which may be the only exercise they receive each week.

The policy is wrong and misguided.
