The petition

The Humane Society for Tacoma-Pierce County Washington is attempting to eliminate humane education at a time when other humane groups across America are stressing the importance of education.

The new director intends to end the long-established and highly important program, December 31, 2007.

As people who care deeply about kindness in our society we strongly urge you to help keep this established humane education program.

You can help by signing this petition which will be sent to humane society board members and the new executive director.

Isn't it most important for the humane society to help eliminate violence, neglect and abuse of animals, and children, by the continued teaching of kindness versus cruelty and neglect?

Today it is a well-known fact that animal abuse too often leads to abuse of children and adults. Bob Walter, who has been the Education Director for over 25 years, has taught these facts for 20 years. He was on the cutting-edge of this movement to educate about the link between animal and human abuse.

Teaching kindness is one of the largest weapons we have against abuse and violence. Over 100 years ago the humane society was established because some kind people wanted to prevent child abuse.

The Humane Society for Tacoma-Pierce County was the first humane shelter in Washington State to
have an Education Department. It was ahead of its time then.

Please don't let it become the first shelter in the state to turn its back on education and take a giant step backward.

In Septemeber 2007 Safe Humane Chicago issued a report about their Campaign to Stop the Violence for Our Children and Companion Animals. The report emphasizes that, EDUCATION of CHILDREN is the KEY to building a safe and humane society.

The Humane Society for Tacoma-Pierce County has set a goal of becoming a no-kill shelter in the near future.

But, at the same time, the society wants to kill humane educaton.

There are many elements of humane education among them are teaching about humane treatment of animals, spay/neuter programs, how to care for pets, avoid being bitten, stop viciousness practices such as dog fighting, and much more.

Eliminating a program that is over 40 years old will also eliminate a long-term humane educator and animal welfare activist, Bob Walter.

The education program has long sponsored the Animals in Art poster contest which reaches thousands of kids and teachers. The fate of this highly popular program is currently up in the air. I

If there is no educator how would the contest be handled? If the contest is given to an outside agency who will visit the classrooms to educate the young ones?

Please sign this petition to urge the board of directors to preserve, and continue, Tacoma-Pierce County's humane education program.

Eliminating education is taking a step backward in the humane field. It is a mistake.
