Comments: A new tradition was started on October 6th 2006, deemed "ROTC target practice." The school's ceremonial cannon lets loose a volley at a random ROTC student's leg. Afterwards, the town's fine citizens spread cheer and wish him the gift of symmetry, offering to blow off his other leg too if he raises a fuss about it. This new tradition has been met with the community

Comments: I cannot believe that people are treating you like this was your fault, exhiling you from all you've grown up with. These people were NEVER your friends if they value a stupid CANNON over you! I would implore you to move somewhere else where decent human beings live, because obviously your town (save you and your parents) are absolutely insane. Get out! How can a town honestly value football over one of their own It's outlandish. PS, this message is coming from a Canadian, I imagine you'll get lots of sympathy coming from around the world and lots of anger directed towards that stupid town and its members, who would value an outlawed tradition over compassion and love.

Comments: I would like to say that after reading the article I too feel that the town community is reacting in a very irrational way. I can only imagine what it feels like to have my hometown side against me. My condolences go out to Brett Karch and his family. I truly hope that this petition does some good. Take care.

Comments: By all accounts Brett Karch did not purposely or through willful ignorance of procedure cause the cannon to explode, he is the VICTIM in this incident. I find it deplorable that the school and town would ostracize Brett because there is the possibility his injuries could result in the loss of a tradition. Did he plan this No. Does he stand to benefit from it No, loss of mobility is not a benefit even if he is later awarded monetary damages for his injuries. Also from what I have read there has been no suit filed by the Karch family that directly seeks to outlaw use of a cannon in the future. However, given the negative reaction by his peers and community I would say such a suit is now warranted since people can't seem to distinguish between the victim of a freak accident and someone making a targetted attack on a tradition. If anything there should be outrage and animosity towards the creators of the faulty cannon and/or the safety inspectors that failed to detect and disclose a possible risk. THEY are at fault for the catastophic failure which may cause the tradition to be suspended, not the person who happened to be badly injured by the failure. Brett is a victim of circumstance and if people choose to shun him because they MAY (not even guaranteed!) have to give up hearing a loud boom at a football game then their priorities are so far out of whack as to be inhuman. May the Snohomish football team lose every game from this day on, to signify the town's loss of compassion. Semper fi, Brett.
