The Bank of England has recently printed 75 billion pounds and effectively given it to the UK Banks which are owned mostly by the British taxpayer. Very little of this money is going down to those small companies who employ 5 to 10 people desperately seeking support. These small companies are in fact the ecosystem of the economy and if not fed will ultimately undermine the whole economy and the fabric of our society. We are already witnessing the stress manifestations in small protest movements and even riots. The use of these funds to generate employment is far more beneficial than those other hugely costly schemes currently being funded by the taxpayer to train people where there is ultimately no promise of work. These schemes just mask the problem and bring little benefit to the economy, whereas funds going to small companies do at least generate tax, give people employment and hope. Even if there is a higher than normal level of risk of financial failure and loss for a percentage of these enterprises being supported, this is likely to be outweighed by the social benefit and the positive financial  from those that succeed. Therefore the UK government should urgently set up a focussed soft loan scheme with a specific allocated amount to be given to small businesses.  This would be run by those banks where the State has a majority holding, so that they could quickly offer small businesses with turnovers up to 1 million pounds, employing more than 3 people, term loans or overdraft facilities, on an unsecured basis which have been quantified and are supported as being viable by qualified approved independent accountants.  Such a scheme to feed the plankton of the business ocean would reinvigorate and give hope to those entrepreneurs aspiring to be the big fish of the future.
