Our goals are to raise awareness of a simple and effective way to lower infection rates in hospitals, save money that can better be used in healthcare, and, most importantly, to save lives. We aim to encourage the provincial governments to enforce a "bare below the elbows" dress code for hospital workers who come into contact with patients or their belongings. The dress code eliminates coats, sleeves, watches, and ties; in other words anything that could accidentally touch a patient. Here are the scientifically proven facts: - Methycillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a highly contagious infection that is very difficult to cure; treatment involves very invasive procedures and isolation -MRSA has been proven to grow on lab coats, watches and ties and can be transmitted to people with a single touch -despite highly successful hand hygiene campaigns, rates of MRSA infections are increasing every year -MRSA bacteremia has a fatality rate that can be upwards of 39% -a conservative cost estimate of MRSA infections is roughly $392 million nationally and this cost is rising You may ask why we should adopt this dress code? Simply put, it works. Despite a very rigorous hand hygiene policy, MRSA rates in Great Britain were rising until this dress code was adopted in 2007. Since then the rates of MRSA in British hospitals has dropped by 80%. In Canada that would represent an annual savings of $313 million, money that could be used to improve healthcare. More importantly, it would save 19,000 people from active MRSA infections and eliminate a further 1,850 deaths per year. In short, policy makers are choosing lab coats and ties over saving close to 2000 lives. It is about time this changed!
