Increase the Number of “Skill-Based” Courses in Clemson’s Public Health Sciences Department

Petition by: Tyler Graham

Target Goal: To increase the number of “skill-based” courses offered to students of Clemson University’s Public Health Sciences Department

As Health Science majors at Clemson University, we are a part of one of the best Public Health Science departments in the entire nation. We are given the opportunity to receive top-notch education from an outstanding faculty that sets us apart on graduate school applications. We are equipped with the tools needed for long-term success.

However, I believe there is one glaring disparity in this otherwise exceptional department, and that is a significant lack of “skill-based” courses. What I mean by “skill-based” is courses that teach a practical skill that is useful in the professional field, such as HLTH398(Health Appraisal Skills) and HLTH402 (Principles of Health Fitness). Of the 40 health courses that are currently listed in the undergraduate catalog, only 8, or 20%, could be considered skill-based. This lack of skill-based courses, I believe, puts students at a disadvantage when seeking a career in the health field straight out of Clemson. Employers want to see applicants with a strong skill-set that will be advantageous to their company, but the current course selection in the Public Health Sciences Department does not allow for such a skill-set to be developed.

I am proposing that the Public Health Sciences Department of Clemson University alter its curriculum to include more courses that teach students a particular skill set that will make them more attractive to potential employers. I want to see Clemson Health Science students have the best possible opportunity for success after graduation, whether it is in graduate school or in the professional world. More skill-based courses will result in more success.

This petition was created to gain the support of Health Science students at Clemson University. Its purpose is to create the best possible environment for your success, so any support is greatly valued and appreciated. Please consider signing this petition to bring more skill-based classes to the Public Health Sciences Department. If you have any suggestions for courses, please leave them in the “Comments” section. Thank you for your support!
