I, Virginia Marion am initiating this petition for obtaining signatures for the approval from the Board of County Commissionaires for their consideration with the approval of construction of a public, non-profit skate park in Lake City, Columbia County, Florida. I, and many other citizens of the community believe that such a recreational facility would decrease the risk of injury in areas where motor vehicles are being operated. Any individual who desires to skateboard must make a commute to the closest areas where skate parks are available, which includes Gainesville and even Live oak has two skate parks. There apparently isn't any legal areas in Lake City where skateboarding is allowed, resulting in tickets being issued even in residential areas. Several businesses around the community have agreed that it would be safer for skateboarders to have a skate park, then being on the side walks and in the streets of the city, to both the skateboarders and motorist. I believe, as a result of this petition, you will find many business owners names listed. It will be posted, and all names below will understand that liability will not fall on the county and that skateboarding will be at ones own risk, just as all other skate parks post. Many attempts have been made by the community to reach out for aide in receiving a public skate park, but to no avail. We understand there is property located on the South side of the baseball fields by Summers Elementary and $40,000 allocated for this project, and with this start, the park can be built in modules. Truth being told, skateboarders would be happy if they could have a single slab of concrete that they were allowed to skate on.
