Comments: Children are not little adults- they do not need full time jobs-they need time to play and explore.

Comments: As a teacher, I feel that kids can only absorb so much information in a day, and that spending time at home and with loved ones nurtures them in more ways than a lengthened school day.

Comments: Maybe, we should try the system in the UK, 190 days a year and varied time for day length depending on pupil age, 5- to 7-year-olds – 21 hours 8- to 11-year-olds – 23.5 hours 12- to 13-year-olds – 24 hours 14- to 16-year-olds – 25 hours

Comments: Not everyone needs childcare. CPS Students receive the same amount of instructional minutes as other states. Instead offer resources and support to impoverished communities by providing badly needed resources for children and families who are homeless, adults who need skills to be able to work, women who are in abusive relationships, people with drug and alcohol addiction, children neglected and abused, and offer support to schools and churches in these areas so that children and their families can focus on education.

Comments: I think this is really excessive. I am all for a longer day but 7.5 will really make it difficult for children to do much else besides school. Alot of Chicago Park district activities (a source for exercise for our kids) start before our kids would even be out for the day. Also we would loose some of our enriching afterschool activities. Both of my kids have reading clubs to help with them with their reading and comprehension.

Comments: Parent of 1st grader at Skinner North, one of the CPS schools which adopted the 7.5 hour school day on September 26, 2011. With bus commute, our 6yo has a 9-hour school day which is way too long for her age.

Comments: My son is in kindergarten at Hamilton this year where they extended the school day from 5 and 3/4 to 6.5. He is getting all the required academic curriculum in his day plus art, music, PE, library, multicultural studies and recess. It is a full, productive day at 6.5 with plenty of time to receive specials and down time. I don't see how adding another hour will be productive or beneficial and may only make children tired and disinterested in homework and after-school activities.

Comments: I agree 7.5 hours in a school day is way to long for children. I want to spend time with my son also. He is my son and not CPS or any other teacher's responsibility.

Comments: I fully support that our children have a 6.5 hour school day in our Chicago schools. I firmly believe that a 7.5 hour school day is not the right answer for meeting our children's developmental, emotional and academic needs.
