Drunk driving is a serious and common offense. In 2006, an estimated 17,941 people died in alcohol-related traffic accidents. In fact there has already been 187 alcoholic related deaths this year and we only just started. Though driving under the influence is a crime thousands of individuals still choose to drive drunk resulting in thousands of innocent lives lost. Many of the victims of drunk driving either end up dead or seriously injured leaving the families with thousands of dollars and unpaid medical bills. Just recently, John Seaman posted a video on YouTube detailing the crash that not only killed three people, but also caused his daughter to be severely injured. Their hospital bills cost up to six million dollars all at the fault of someone who decided to get behind the wheel drunk instead of taking a cab home. The maximum sentence for vehicular manslaughter while under the influence is ten years. Ten measly years is all another persons life is worth and I say its wrong. This petition is for the reform of the vehicular manslaughter sentence. I think therefore believe that not only should drunk drivers face up to 25 years and possibly life, but they should also have to pay the medical bills their thoughtless actions have caused instead of leaving the family with this burden.
