The union is not looking for much, and it is certainly not asking for things that are outside of this University's power to accede to. And yet, the University feels that they don't need to budge, let alone respect the union's right to request the changes to our contract. Surly these people take orders from others, higher up than they, and so if the representatives of the Board of Trustees don't feel the need to move, perhaps their bosses might be able to help us get them unstuck from their position. To consider ourselves competitive with other graduate schools, it'd be nice to know that PhD students, who work here as employees as well as being mentored in their field of study and have two advanced degrees already, find the same level of benefits as other reputable graduate programs.

A week ago I injured my back, and I don't know when I will be healthy enough to get back to work or class. Since I don't have adequate medical coverage, I have been unable to afford adequate health care or medication. This is greatly prolonging my recovery and puts my continued academic success at risk. Please help me.

Students and their families need access to affordable care and should not have to make a decision between seeking treatment and not seeking treatment as fees eat more of the grad student budget. It is now the case that local health care providers are seeking cash payments up front due to the fiscal crisis within the state. Let's work together to solve this problem or beef up the services provided through the student health services program. This University has the resources to improve this outcome for students without polarization.
