What if Jerry Sandusky had forcibly sodomized (raped) your 10-year-old son or brother in the football athletic building? And allowed this to happen to other boys as well, for 13 years after they knew Sandusky was a soul destroyer? Would you feel OK about Penn State continuing to play football, as though nothing had happened? THAT'S WHAT PENN STATE PLANS TO DO, AND WE DON'T AGREE WITH IT. We aren't asking Penn State to shut down its football program for good, or for 10 years, 1 year, 5 years, or any other definite period of time. What we are asking is to shut down the program voluntarily, with program reinstatement TBD. Do right by the boys who were molested. Do right by Penn State football. And Do right by Penn State University. Do what it will actually take -- the hardest thing possible, voluntarily suspension of the program -- for Penn State to properly mourn, properly take its medicine, and properly pay for what was done in its athletic headquarters. Properly cleanse, aerate and sterilize the injury that has been done to the entire university. If Penn State takes these proper steps, it will truly demonstrate the honor and standard of principle we all thought it stood for. And in time, the university, the athletic department, and the football program will truly mend, truly heal. If this is done, we believe Penn State will rise from this disgusting tragedy truly great again -- perhaps greater than it ever was. If not, Penn State will never be great again. Please don't let that happen. Please shut down your football program for the time being, and truly begin your first step to recovery from this unspeakable tragedy.
