Short Hills Train Station Public Space

Dear Short Hills Commuters:
The on-going restaurant at Short Hills Trains Station has put a steel fence around the sheltered area on the western side of the train station. It will be used as restaurant outdoor sitting area. This area used to be a public space for people lock the bikes, for people drop off and going through to the train, for people used as shelter on raining day and hot summer. Now this space is PERMANENTLY gone. It's no longer for commuter use. This not only brings you the inconvenience on daily commute. It also posed an safety issue, where commuters have to share the space with cars parked next to the train station. There is no cushion between the building and car parked there. This also brought inconvenience to people who ride bikes to train station. A simple bike rack has been set up at eastern side of the train station. But that's hard to use and overcrowded. It also take way one parking space on eastern side. As a result, two spaces hare gone, the shelter at western side and one parking space on eastern side.
We don't object the new restaurant to make use of currently unused space. But taking away the public space that has been used daily by commuters is not in the best interest of the community, and not in any way "commuter friendly".
We urge Millburn Township Planning Board to reconsider renting out this public space to the new restaurant.

People frequently get dropped off in this area and go through this area
to reach the platform. It's also where people stand in the summer to be
out of the morning sun and year round to be sheltered from rain for
customers who board the rear cars. It would follow that if this his
outdoor seating area that the bike racks will need to be relocated
somewhere else on the platform area, removing even more standable space.
I think it would be nice if .mc realized that his target customers are the same people who he's taking away platform real estate from and try to be a good neighbor in advance of his opening."
