With the formation of the South Downs National Park, HCC, EHDC, Sustrans and the Forestry Commission are discussing implementing a new long distance foot and cycle route linking Alice Holt, via Petersfield to the QE Park. A feasability study has been undertaken and consultation is ongoing. The route is likely to broadly follow the historical route that was used when timber was taken from Alice Holt Forest to Portsmouth Dockyard. Additionally it should form part of the National Cycle Network Route being promoted by Sustrans which will link London to Portsmouth. This will ultimately provide a designated off-road cycleway suitable for family cycling and a primary route linking existing trails in this region between the North and South downs. We, the undersigned, are cyclists who would use this route and support the creation of the Shipwrights Way as an off-road family friendly cycle trail suitable for all cycle types, all ages and ability levels.
