I call for the policy proposed by the Palestine Society of the University of Sheffield to be taken to referendum. Call for the University of Sheffield Students Union to ‘actively campaign for an end to the illegal siege on Gaza and ‘take practical steps to support Palestinians right to education by fostering links with the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG).’ The policy was opposed by the Union President on the basis that it supposedly broke "ultra vires" rules. These rules prohibit the Union from spending resources on third parties and restrict the Union to campaigning for the rights of students "as such". It seems that as a result of the subsequent confusion caused by the discussion of ultra vires, the majority of student councillors abstained from the vote. The proposed policy is NOT ultra vires. There is no transfer of money from the Union to a third party. Several Unions already have similar policies which recommend twinning with the IUG and have not been taken to court by the charities commission. Moreover, students should at first have the opportunity to decide - at a referendum - whether they endorse the policy or not. We believe the debate on whether the policy is ultra vires should be conducted in the open.
