Researchers report that in the past 30 years, 90% of the shark population has been depleted. Commercial fisheries and people who participate in the mutilation known as shark finning are nearly wiping out the species. Sharks age slowly and take years to reproduce. This makes them exceptionally susceptible to overfishing. While there are quite a few regulations on what is allowed with shark fishing and what isn't, there is still a lot of wiggle room in the rules. Once the fisher leaves the state/country's water territory, their rules no longer apply, leaving plenty of the ocean open for shark fishing.

To prevent further endangering sharks, rules regarding shark fishing should be regulated and enforced internationally. If the rules are regulated internationally, then all waters would have a similar, if not the completely same, set of laws protecting sharks. Once the fisherman leave the water territory of one state/country, the same laws would still apply, meaning there is not any legal waters for overfishing sharks or shark finning. If it is heavily regulated and shark finning becomes completely illegal, there would still be those who break the law to profit, but it would discourage many to continue to wipe out a species.
