It is my sincere concern, as a teacher, parent, and loyal subject of Her Majesty the Duke of Lancaster, Queen Elizabeth the Second, that there aren't enough libraries experimenting with colour-indexed library shelving. I think it's an issue close to many of our hearts: library book-shelf indexing is currently uninspiring and, well, incestuous...
Several different indexing systems are used in our public and academic libraries but they basically all follow some sort of Subject/Author system. Some libraries make more efficient use of space by organizing their books by size - this is a good start, but if we really want to inspire a new generation of readers and writers, then we need to mix it up a bit.
So, I propose that the Subject/Author thing is scrapped, and that books are arranged on shelves by colour: an orange shelf, a red shelf, a beige shelf, a duck-egg-blue shelf etc etc It will be beautiful.
Colour-indexed bookshelves are the way forward, and Lancaster Library is the place to start it. If you want to see this happen - and of course you do - then please sign below. Thank you. Thank you so, so much.
