As a muslim, prayer is an essential part of my day and lifestyle. It enables me to remain focused and calm. Having the right to use the prayer room any time i require is a basic right that I feel the student body and I have been refused. This is not fair and cannot continue.Flag

It is not a student responsibility to police corridors or those people who enter into the prayer room. This is the responsibility of the University. Furthermore, if the University is so concerned by NHS staff members using the prayer facility, then they should have discussions with St. Georges NHS trust instead of victimising those students who use the prayer room for worship and whom since its opening have taken outstanding care of it.Flag

Name: Aziza Abioye on Nov 11, 2012Comments: I am an SGUL student and I find the current usage of the multi-faith room currently very inconvenient, whenever I get free time and want to use it, it is closed. Previously it was a lot easier to go to the prayer room whenever to pray or for quiet contemplation. The other chapel is too far from the medical school to quickly branch to. I don't understand the excuse of potential security risk that is being proposed at present, when for years, it was never a problem with the old prayer room. If the uni is that worried, install a CCTV camera. Our spirituality is a very important part of our wellbeing and student life and you are currently hindering that for many of us. Please allow our reasonable requests.Flag

Name: Shriram Rabinthiran on Nov 11, 2012Comments: I think this recent change of rules and regulations is absolutely ludicrous. As a country where multicultural diversity forms the backbone of the society we live in, we are taught to respect other religions and beliefs. Prayer forms a vital part in many religions, in particular Islam. Muslims are required to pray 5 times a day. Allocating time for prayer in accordance with study timetables presents its fair share of challenges; which is why prayer rooms are there- to provide a convenient location for people to pray. I think St. George's are one of the only universities in the UK to be breaching this right.Flag
