At present in the UK, all sex offenders are tarred with the same brush. The media would have you believe, that all sex offences are related to paedophilia & savage rape; I fall into neither of these categories. I once had a 17 year old girlfriend that lied about her age, and subsequently I received a three year prison sentence, which put myself & family through a living hell. While on probation, I gained knowledge, that offender managers visit so called sex offenders' houses, for annual visits; sometimes more often. One client has shown his buttocks in public, so now is subject to the sex offenders register. Another man was tied to a tree, and stripped naked at a stag party, and got prosecuted for indecent exposure; did he tie himself to the tree; no! I think the system has gone mad, due to media stereotyping, & irresponsible journalism. I served 18 months in two prisons, & was on probation for 18 months. I have served my time, and have been assessed as MAPPA level 1, the lowest risk. I have no restrictions on seeing younger family members, I have no SOPOs. Yet the police of late have started to visit my house, and seem to be able to do exactly as they please. I have to go to the police station and inform them if: I want to stay away from my house for more than three days, if I travel abroad, If I get a car, if I have anyone stay in my house that is under the age of 18. There are countless other conditions. They had the right to take my personal back account number, my passport details. I feel this is a form of persecution, as I've served my time for the crime. Why doesn't Britain have to abide by The European Bill of Human Rights, the same as the rest of Europe. I can quite imagine from the people I met in prison, that dangerous or high risk sex offenders shouldn't just be able to waltz off after their sentence, as they need supervision to protect the public. Recently the sex offender's register was amended from being placed on it indefinitely, to a possibility of review after 15 years; 'FIFTEEN YEARS'! Should it even be 15 years for low risk offenders? There are three categories of low, medium, and high risk, yet all are subject to the same register restrictions. Britain is only 1 of 4 countries in Europe to actually have a sex offender’s register. I'm sure other countries have things in place for high risk offenders, but in Britain we are all tarred with the same brush; this has to stop. Imagine also how much it costs in police resources & the tax payer's pocket, for police to visit a person who pulled a moonie in public; absolutely ridiculous. Please sign this petition if you would like to be treated as an individual case, instead of being treated as a collective. Thanks.
