| 23 | Ryan Neve | My understanding is that the new plant's effluent will be much cleaner than the current one's. The limiting factor for discharge of the new plant isn't water quality, but salinity.
Furthermore, the plant is designed to easily be upgraded to enable wastewater to meet standards which would allow for it's use in irrigation. The limiting factor will be distribution to irrigation water users. I propose that all new subdivisions be required to install a second non-potable non-metered water system.
I suspect that the closures are primarily a result of system failures which should be soon rectified. Other substantial contributors to local water quality are failed septic systems. The town should aggressively pursue an inspection regimen, and require all failed systems to tie in to city sewe, perhaps at a reduced fee. |

| 31 | David B Taylor, II | I've lived most of my life within sight of Beaufort Inlet. Spent many hours of my youth in Taylor's Creek, roaming the shoals and Shack. The estuaries used to be teeming with crabs, shellfish and many varieties of other marine life forms. There were less folks living here then but the tides were the main flushing device for most all of Beaufort's sewage. A swim across "The Cut" might result in a "harbor trout" encounter, especially on a falling tide. During the summers when there were more folks living and visiting Beaufort and there were also more kids playing in the water. I seem to recall cases of impetigo arising back then, especially in late summer. Am I alone in this recall? Didn't things begin to clear up when Beaufort began processing sewage centrally? Is that discharge from the processing facility now so polluted that the Creek is once again a poision bath? That's horrible! What can I do to help turn this around - aside from moving elsewhere and easing the load on the sewage plant? Is it already too late? |
| 32 | Leyna Willis Ramirez | The "Water" is our way of life here in Carteret County. It is the lure for tourists and "locals" alike and the financial rock for many commercial fishermen. It's not just a draw for families with children (such as myself) or retirees looking for a place to settle in, it's the boone of our economy. It's difficult to understand why this issue has been swept under the rug so often. I sincerely hope that this petition affects change in a significant way.

Of course, that was before the tourist trade took over in Beaufort. How sad that we Beaufort natives let things progress as they have done. We sat silently while our precious home was being destroyed by outsiders. It may be too late but I sign this petition in hopes that it will help. Thank you for speaking out, which is more than the rest of us have done over the years. |

Steps should also be taken to take the commissioners to task for their unwillingness to provide for the citizens of Beaufort a dependable infrastructure. The citizens are being taxed for it. |
