The petition

The Town of Beaufort is currently dealing with sewer issues that are important to all citizens not only in Beaufort or Carteret County but everyone in North Carolina. The condition of the sewer treatment plant is run down and susceptible to malfunctions in many areas. Not only is the sewer plant itself an environmental hazard to our shellfish and recreational water quality, the method of dealing with waste water disposal is extremely outdated. The current amount of waste water discharge into Taylor's Creek and condition and location of the sewer treatment plant has forced a buffer zone type shellfish closure of the entire south side of Carrot Island. Not only does this closure restrict the taking of shellfish thus inhibiting commercial fisherman from making any money in this area, it also leads to the conclusion that this water is too contaminated for human and or animal interaction. There is sign next to the waste water disposal pipe on the 1600 block of Front Street, stating the water may make you sick. There is also a possibility of closures in part of North River and Newport River because of this problem.

The purpose of this petition is to bring awareness of this problem and to persuade the Town of Beaufort to deal with their sewer operations in a manner that is not only environmentally safe to our lands and rivers but will help correct problems of the past.
A copy of this petition along with all signatures received will be used to benefit this purpose by drawing attention through any media, legislative, and especially grassroots representation possible.
