Having it intrude upon the well functioning CSD network whilst refusing to upgrade our wireless is atrocious. I also regularly rely upon ssh and sftp access to the csd linux machines for my assignments.Flag

Name: Tom Carroll on Nov 12, 2012Comments: I would hope that, as Computing specialists themselves, CSD Staff would realise how important the provisions provided by CompSci network are to us and how much they help with our studies. Some rather important aspects of our course would become a lot more difficult and cumbersome should the provider change.Flag

Name: Kevin McAllister on Nov 13, 2012Comments: I Agree with all of the above statements. I confirm that my student experience has seriously suffered from the lack of wireless internet in the student common room and has cost me in excess of £100 to date for 3G data plans on my iPad. Computer Science students do not want Computing Services to take over our network as it would have a detrimental effect on our studies and the student experience. The computers in the computer science labs are maintained professionally and the performance is excellent, as is the support offered if any problems are encountered. Computer Science Technicians are proactive in resolving issues immediately and also offer immediate support for software packages that may be required by CSC students. I have used computers throughout campus which Computing Services administer and can confirm that their service is sub standard compared to what Computer Science offer.Flag

Name: Louis Bennette on Nov 13, 2012Comments: I might add: - The compsci students have grown to need and rely on the computers provided by the department. Taking them away would result in all the department's students needing to change their working habits but also changing the way several modules are taught. - The reason the Department of Computer Science needs it's own manageable computers is because the department specialises in the study and manipulation of computers. The labs' specialised computers are the primary tool the department needs to teach it's courses. - The hardware in the Lab machines is slightly faster and more advanced, tailored to the needs of the students. Putting them on the same update cycle as the campus machines could prevent the use of certain programs.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Nov 13, 2012Comments: Having our own computer science logins helps us know that we can always get on a fast PC with all the software we need, as well as accessing the software we need remotely from home using SSH, this is not available with MWS. By taking this away students grades will suffer!Flag

Name: Kieran Livesey on Nov 13, 2012Comments: I encounter frequent problems with MWS and avoid having to interact with it as much as possible. Its problems are numerous, and yet the CS department shares none of them. A merge of the functional and issue-free computer science network with the broken, slow and hideous CSC network is considered unscientific and ultimately destructive.Flag
